Author Interview: Houston Havens

Author-Interview-Lady

Author Houston Havens was gracious enough to give us an interview. I have to admit I was really impressed with her answers!!!

1)      What inspired you to write? Has this always been your dream?

I’m an analyzer of everything around me. I want to know what makes it tick…why people do what they do. I’m a curious person by nature. So, I guess life in general is what inspires me to write.

I’m not a dreamer. I’m a doer. I set many goals and then schedule a time for when those goals will be met. I’ve always written, but it wasn’t until I retired from my modeling career that I then moved to my next goal which was getting published.

2)      Do you draw inspiration from people you know for your characters?

No. I never have to draw from people I know because my characters and stories come to me in whole with plot and personalities intact.

3)      Your series is called the Psychic Menage Series, very interesting, but why that name? (I admit my mind went to thinking are psychics having a threesome????)

LOL. The title came because many of the main characters throughout the series, be it a remote viewer (Mind Traveler) a ghost or shifter will have sex in the psychic dimension of our reality. Sex in the astral is total consumption of the mind, spirit, and body.

4)  a) Is it hard to write in more than one genre?

Not for me. I’m Irish! *wink* I don’t like being forced into one genre. I’m a creative writer…wherever my creativity takes me to tell an awesome story – I will go. This series covers ten genres.

b) Do you prefer writing one genre over another?

No. Genre plays no part in what I write. I hate Pigeon-holing my work into the limited genre they offer when you upload a book for market. It gives the readers a limited idea of what your books are about.

When Sinful Surrender was released, it was listed under Scifi-erotic-romance. A lot of reviewers didn’t want to read it because of the Scifi genre listing. Almost every one of them commented how happy they were to have read the book and how surprised they were about loving the story and how much they enjoyed it. They were shocked how easily they understood the scifi parts of my erotic-romance of my book. They said they would start considering reading more of the scifi genre because of Sinful Surrender.

Sadly, they had a preconceived notion about the Scifi genre…I surprised them and they gave me 5 stars with beautiful reviewers that touched my heart.

My point here is don’t limit yourself as an author and as readers if you love an author’s voice…trust her to take you on a fabulous journey no matter what the genre.

That’s the other thing that has stood out in a lot of my reviews, readers who were surprised my story didn’t go the way they thought it would go (cookie cutter) and they fought following the path I led at the start until they realized I was giving them what they were asking for-for so long…Something Different. Once they let go and actually allowed me to tell them my story, my way, they loved it.

c) Is it difficult for you to write sex scenes?

No, but I hear many authors struggle with it.

5) a) Do you think 50 Shades of Grey has done more good or harm to the erotica book community?

I wouldn’t know. I didn’t read the book.

Key word: EroticA – for an erotica she apparently did well (hey, she got a movie deal-she did something right).

b) Does 50 Shades make writing erotica harder for you?

I don’t write erotica – I write erotic-romance, and there is a major BIG difference.

EROTICA= sex story.

EROTIC-ROMANCE= story plot (be it mystery, scifi, paranormal or western) and a (romantic) sexual (bedroom doors open) storyline as well. Two stories in one.

Me? I braided in a series plot (Dystopian) with a ten genre (Lord of the rings – kind of thing) individual book storyline, and a sexual story into my series.

Each book carries three story plotlines for the reader to follow. And the readers seem to be enjoying it based on the reviews I’ve gotten.

6)      Do you believe in HEA? Do you believe a series must end in HEA?

All my books end with an HEA…for the individual story of the book’s storyline…I can’t say the SERIES plotline will have or not have an HEA – We’ll find out when we get there.

7) a) Do you listen to music when you write?

When I write the sex scenes, yes.

b) If the answer is yes, What is on your writing playlist?

Smooth Jazz (Listening – no words)

8) What is your favorite book of all time?

In the Romance genre? My newly found favorite is a series called ‘Tales of the Chosen’ but it’s in strong competition with ‘At The Pleasure of Her Mercy’ both are written by Kayelle Allen. Wonderful and very talented author.

9) Do you still fangirl over other authors?

LOL…I’ve never been a “fangirl”…not even over my favorite rock star.

10) Do you think it is harder for Indie authors to get their name out there?

Yes…they don’t have the ‘book store’ exposure or top 5 publishing houses’ ads (mailing lists) behind them.

11) What do you want readers to take away from your books? Is there a message you want your readers to know?

Enjoyment…that’s what I want my readers to take away from my books. I do add a depth to my characters and to the tales I tell that I hope they will enjoy and think about long after the story is done.

I mix facts (very real and sometime scary facts) with myths (that might not be myths if looked at harder)…I hope they will give pause to the silent message I’m putting out there for them to consider the possibilities. After all…we create our own reality as they say.
